Story
The story
At the Whitaker family's engagement party, Norah Whitaker watches her fiancé Oliver Donovan devour the honey-glazed wings that built her family's restaurant empire. When she asks why he is eating them, he dismisses her, and she calls off the engagement on the spot.
Her mother Diane and Oliver's parents turn on her, insisting it is only a wing and that she is humiliating him. Oliver drops to his knees, then threatens to release private photos from her bedroom unless she takes him back. His father demands she kneel and apologize or the photos will be published by midnight.
Norah refuses, standing alone against both families and the whispering guests.
Opening excerpt
The engagement party had finally begun to wind down, the heavy scent of lilies and expensive perfume hanging in the stagnant air of the ballroom. We had just taken our seats at the head table—my family, the man I was supposed to spend my life with, and his parents.
Then, he did it.
Without a word, he reached for a plate in the center of the table and grabbed one of the signature honey-glazed wings—the Whitaker family’s pride, a recipe that had built our restaurant empire. He started eating it.
