Story

The story

Luke Merritt has spent six years keeping quiet about what Bryce Calloway and his friends did to him in a high-school bathroom, and about the video that followed him through school. Now Bryce has landed a government post, and everyone around Luke celebrates him: his mother, his homeroom teacher Mr. Pruitt, and Olivia Kent, his girlfriend and childhood sweetheart, who treats Bryce's celebration as her own.

Luke has quietly placed first on both the written exam and the interview for a government position of his own, though he has told no one and is still inside his final review period. Instead of striking at Bryce himself, he sends the evidence he has saved for six years to Sabrina Holt, who placed eleventh and missed the cut, and she files a complaint under her own name.

At Bryce's celebration dinner at the Grand Crescent, with three days left in the pending hire period, Luke carries a gift meant for Bryce and waits for the review to decide what comes next.

The comments were nothing but congratulations.

My mom gushed, "Now that's a kid who made something of himself. Leaves my good-for-nothing son in the dust."

My girlfriend, my childhood sweetheart, couldn't fawn over him fast enough. "Need a lunch buddy at the new job? Hit me up anytime."

I stared at the screen for a long time. I remembered senior year, when he and his friends cornered me in the bathroom.
