Story
The story
Lillian Cowfer, a human trafficker who evaded capture for ten years, is finally brought to trial. In open court she stuns the gallery by insisting the indictment is wrong: she kidnapped not 23 people, but 24. The 24th victim, she says, had no family to begin with, and she even found her a new one. Then she turns to the judge, Mason Leighton, and asks whether he wants to know where his daughter is.
Mason stays calm, declaring that his daughter Claire is at home, and dismisses Lillian's words as lies. Yet the missing girl is Carol, and the one who truly caused her death is Claire, the perfect stepdaughter. Because Carol is tied to the case, Mason must step aside from the investigation, and he directs the search toward Harmony Estates and Greenwood Cemetery, convinced Carol may be an accomplice.
Only Carol, lingering unseen, knows the truth of her three-year nightmare. Then Alexander sends Mason a photograph of a bloodstained shoe found in a pigpen, and Mason recognises it at once.
Opening excerpt
Lillian Cowfer, a human trafficker who had been on the run for ten years, was finally caught.
On the day of her public trial, she listened to the charges against her.
Then she suddenly smiled. "I object. The indictment says I kidnapped 23 people, but that's not true. I kidnapped 24."
The entire courtroom fell silent.
