Story

The story

Thirteen-year-old Chloe has always been the obedient daughter her parents believe her to be. When her mother decides a new marriage matters more, she coldly orders the girl out, certain that Chloe will come running back to serve her in old age. Chloe packs her few clothes into two plastic bags and leaves without a word.

At her father's gate, she is refused too. He is about to remarry, and his family hurls curses from the courtyard, calling her a jinx and a burden. Neither parent wants her, yet both expect her future support.

But Chloe has only ever pretended to be good. Beneath the meekness lies a rebel, and her parents have no idea who they have cast out.

Opening excerpt

Ever since I was little, I was an obedient and well-behaved girl. At thirteen, when my mother decided she didn't want to raise me anymore and coldly told me to get out, I obediently packed my two bags of clothes and left.

Right after kicking me out, she told my aunt, "She's just a burden. How am I supposed to remarry if I have to drag her along?"
