Delivering the Mistress's Child

Dr. Anstey Fairclough steps out of a staff elevator and finds her husband, Nelson Fairclough, screaming at hospital staff outside an operating room, demanding that they save his wife and baby. Since Anstey is his wife, she wonders who is lying on the table. She is called in as lead surgeon, and Nelson fails to recognize her behind her surgical cap and mask.

The patient is Olivia Hilton, the wife of Nelson's cousin Edmund, a soldier long away on duty. Olivia is eight months pregnant, and her contractions were triggered by sexual activity. Anstey realizes the affair and suspects the child may be Nelson's, especially since she herself could never conceive and Nelson refused testing while his mother, Rosina Fairclough, took his side.

Anstey must now deliver the baby of the woman sleeping with her husband, while Olivia demands her husband be present and Rosina later blocks the newborn's care. Anstey resolves to divorce Nelson once she gets home.
