Story
The story
After a year working overseas, Wendy returns home early to surprise her husband Ross and son Toby, only to find her best friend Tina standing in her place. At Toby's school essay competition, he calls Tina his mommy, and Ross sits with Tina, their hands linked, while other parents praise the perfect family. At home, Tina wears a wedding band identical to Wendy's, and Ross explains it was only to spare Toby from cruel schoolyard gossip. Toby asks Wendy to buy Tina a fireworks display with his saved money, and says he would rather stay with Daddy and Auntie Tina than follow Wendy abroad. The warm lights Ross once searched thirteen cities to find have been replaced by Tina's cold tones, and the warm water he always left is now iced juice. When an old friend in London offers Wendy a new start, she must decide whether to keep fighting for a family that no longer seems to need her.

During my year-long overseas posting, my husband and son cried on the phone every day, telling me how much they missed me.
Ross insisted on scheduled video calls just to get through his workday, and my little boy, Toby, refused to go to sleep unless I sang to him over a cross-ocean call.
Then came the day I got distracted during one of those calls and fell into a storm drain.
Instead of clinging to me, they suddenly became the ones comforting me.
"Honey, focus on your work. It is only a year, and I can wait."
