Story
The story
Alexa Truman has spent seven years in the Warren household as a wife no one loves and a mother to a boy who despises her. On the anniversary of his mother Bianca's death, Clifford Warren cuts her dress and douses her in paint, then fills her bath with salt water and chili juice. His father Vincent, president of the Warren Group, offers no comfort, only punishment: a rose tattoo carved into her wounds in Bianca's memory.
Alexa came to the Warrens to save her adoptive mother Maggie Patterson, trading her eggs for medical bills. Clifford was born from one of them, carried by Bianca, and Vincent has always made clear that only Bianca's child matters. When Maggie dies, Alexa declares the agreement void and refuses to attend the party honoring Bianca.
Vincent calls her selfish, but Alexa no longer knows what she is to this family. With nothing left to hold her, she prepares to walk away from the husband and step-son who never wanted her.
Opening excerpt
It was the anniversary of my adoptive mother, Maggie Patterson's death. I, Alexa Truman, put on a long black dress. Clifford Warren, who was just seven years old at the time, came running towards me. In his hand was a pair of sharp scissors. Swiftly, he cut through the hem of my dress. Then, he emptied an entire bucket of paint over me.
"Today is my mother's birthday! How could you wear such an unlucky thing? Don't you remember she hated the color black?" Clifford's words were like daggers. Right then, I understood.
