Betrayed Groom: Trading My Life for Revenge

Victor Pearson has spent twenty-four years loving Cherie Blackstone, his childhood sweetheart. When his System crashes and is replaced, the new one reveals the truth: Cherie's agreement to marry him was never real. She has a lover, Max Wheeler, and her affection for Victor is entirely feigned. Her intimacy with him is only a ploy to let Max be reborn inside his body.

The new System offers Victor a choice: abandon the mission and die together with Max, or complete it and receive a new body—but lose all his memories and eventually die. He chooses to continue, then quietly gathers the gifts and memories of Cherie, books a plane ticket, and goes to see her one last time. Outside her office he overhears her friend Erica Nolan speak of Max, and Cherie's silence tells him she is waiting for him to die.

Victor is left to ask why the woman he loved is forcing him to pave the way for another man's life with his own death.
