Story

The story

Tessa's husband Marcus runs his life by a colour-coded calendar, allotting her thirty minutes a day and refusing to bend for anything. When her first-trimester scan returns red flags, her call to him is cut off and a clipped voice memo reminds her not to disturb his focus hours. Yet outside a veterinary clinic she finds him cradling a shivering French bulldog beside Audrey, the friend who introduced them and who now laughs at Tessa's tears.

Marcus insists Audrey is different, and Audrey calls Tessa's distress a manufactured tantrum, urging her to grow up. Humiliated on the sidewalk, Tessa quietly schedules a procedure with Dr. Janet Ward, resolved not to raise a child in this house. Marcus warns that perhaps they should not have this child at all, then walks away without looking back.

Left alone with Audrey, Tessa sees the sweet mask drop and hears a cool suggestion that she file for divorce.

My husband, Marcus, lived by the tyranny of his Google Calendar.

Every minute of his waking life was color-coded, synchronized, and locked down like Fort Knox. He did not accommodate emergencies; he did not tolerate spontaneous detours.

Even when my first-trimester scan came back with red flags, the call I placed to his cell was cut off after the second ring.

His voice memo landed five seconds later, clipped and clinical:

“Tessa, your blocks are twelve to twelve-thirty and ten to ten-thirty at night. Do not disrupt my focus hours outside those windows.
