Pay Me in Regret

In the second year of her marriage, Marina's husband Teman seems to go deaf whenever she speaks, answering her only with silence and irritation. His aloofness, excused by her best friend Bridget as mere obliviousness, grinds at her until every small slight aches.

At his department retreat, Marina asks Teman for a bottle of water. He opens it and hands it to Bridget instead, seated half a table away. When Marina's face falls, he mocks her before their colleagues, and Bridget's glance turns cold and contemptuous. Marina crushes the positive pregnancy confirmation in her pocket.

Then Bridget proposes whitewater rafting, knowing Marina is terrified of rushing water. Teman urges her to overcome it for the team. For once, Marina refuses.
