A Love Let Go, A Past Forgotten

For nine years Zoey has stood at the edge of her own relationship. Before registering their marriage, Yale Grant stops her from trying on the wedding jewelry and fastens it around her best friend, Willa Lawson instead, letting strangers mistake the two for a couple. In the car, at the restaurant, on the anniversary trip she waited eight hours at the airport for, Willa always takes her place, and Yale always finds another reason she should step aside.

When Zoey finally asks why he doesn't simply marry Willa, he calls her childish. Asked to name her flaws, he lists them without pause; asked about Willa's, he can only say even her pimples are pretty. Each slight is counted and swallowed, until she quietly answers a message from her boss, Ms. Zane, accepting a promotion that means five years overseas.

As Yale and Willa walk ahead into the sunset, he turns and waves for Zoey to come along.
