Story
The story
Every three months, Vicky's memory resets, and she loops back to the day she hates Channing most. She shatters his fingers to avenge her adopted son Tim, then kneels beneath fireflies and asks Channing to marry her, and the clock resets again. Channing plays his part in their tragedy on repeat, waiting for the day her memory finally sticks.
Then he overhears Vicky laughing with her friends behind a mahogany door. There is no amnesia. This is round nine of a game, penance for cheap street food that once gave Tim food poisoning. Channing learns his ruined gallery dream was bought and paid for, and that his devotion has been a punchline all along.
In the dark, he summons The System and asks it to wipe every memory he has of Vicky. Then his phone rings: his father is dying, and the hospital bill is beyond him. When Vicky appears to hold him, Channing asks her for fifty thousand dollars, and she freezes.
Opening excerpt
She would loop back to the day she hated me most. She would break my hand, shattering my fingers over and over again to avenge her adopted son. Then, beneath a canopy of fireflies, she would get down on one knee, ask me to marry her, and the clock would reset.
