Story
The story
Cecelia cannot bear to owe anyone anything. When her childhood friend Dylan buys her a cheap iced tea, she repays him with a diamond ring; a handmade keychain earns him a new car. Her husband Jason tells himself this cold reciprocity is simply her way of showing respect, until Dylan enters their lives and every small kindness from him is repaid a thousand times over.
At their fifth wedding anniversary party, a drunken game leaves Dylan's lips brushing Cecelia's. Rather than apologise, she kisses him properly to settle the debt, then leans in for more as friends cheer. When a spilled glass stains Dylan's shoes, she orders Jason to kneel and clean them, reminding him that his brother Noah's hearing depends on her.
Humiliated and exhausted, Jason begins to see the ledger she hides behind. That night Cecelia's car carries him home, and Dylan posts a photo of her sleeping face.
