Story
The story
Away on a business trip, a husband idly opens his wife's social media post: a nine-photo grid of her and their one-year-old son, Benji, captioned as a quiet few days holding down the fort. When he zooms in on the third picture, on the balcony at sunset, something in it sends him bolting from his hotel room to dial emergency services, insisting his wife is dead and his son is in the hands of a murderer.
Officers who reach the apartment find the woman calm and the baby asleep, and they run her driver's license: Beth Hale. Her mother, Ruth, arrives to find nothing amiss, and the patrolman gently suggests the husband is worn down by work and prone to severe anxiety. He calls his own mother to come and stay, so that two grandmothers and one wife will be watching over Benji, yet the terror does not lift, because one of those three is not who she claims to be.
He rides the train home through the night and walks straight into the precinct, carrying a single photograph and the certainty that no one else can see what he sees.
Opening excerpt
On the third day of my business trip, my wife posted a nine-photo grid on social media.
A quiet, tender chronicle of her holding down the fort alone with our one-year-old son.
The caption read: "Daddy’s out of town, but this little guy is being an absolute angel."
I smiled, tapping the first thumbnail to expand it.
