Story
The story
A storm traps Stephanie and her cousin Brooke inside Little Sprouts Learning Center on Thanksgiving Eve with one unclaimed child, Toby Fletcher. When glowing lines of text appear in the air, they reveal that Toby is not a six-year-old boy but a shattered man, that the woman listed as his mother is his wife, and that he has killed her and now carries homemade pipe bombs beneath his oversized windbreaker.
Brooke, oblivious and cruel, mocks the silent child and hurls insults at him, while Stephanie scrambles to keep the peace. A piece of chocolate, a torn marriage certificate and a smear of blood on a small backpack push the night toward the edge, and the floating words warn that every lie told in the room is being counted.
Locked in with a man who despises liars, Stephanie must hold her ground while Brooke's contempt keeps tightening the wire.
Opening excerpt
1
The storm had been threatening the valley all afternoon, turning the sky the color of a bruised plum before the streetlights even flickered to life. It was Thanksgiving Eve, the kind of night when parents rushed through the glass doors of Little Sprouts Learning Center smelling of wet wool and melting butter, desperate to scoop up their toddlers and beat the holiday interstate gridlock.
By six o’clock, every child had been claimed. Except for Toby Fletcher.
He was six years old—or at least, that was what his enrollment paperwork said.
