The Cost of Favoring His Secretary

When her mother's condition turns critical, Angeline calls her husband, Robert Gilmer, for help. Half a million dollars appears in her account within minutes, but the transfer is frozen pending review and never clears. She calls him again and again; on the seventieth call he drops the line, and she waits long enough to receive her mother's death notice. Only then does she learn the truth: the dying woman is Robert's own mother, Cassidy Gilmer, while her mother, Denise Bross, is alive and has been helping care for her mother-in-law.

Robert refuses to believe it. He accuses Angeline of cursing his mother for the sake of her inheritance, and when he finds a funeral portrait on the table, he has his bodyguards smash the room and drag Denise from her bed. Then his demolition crew tears down Denise's old house, leaving her injured and in need of long bed rest.

Robert keeps sending money as apology, still certain Angeline's mother is the one dying, and Angeline cannot make him see what he has done.
