On his first morning at Beacon Media, Sean adds his new department director, Margot Reed, to his phone contacts, fooled by the black cat icon he knows from his little sister Phoebe. That night he sends five hundred dollars to the wrong thread, along with brotherly texts about dorm rooms and warm blankets. Margot, Senior Director of Operations, reads them in silence and wonders if the sender is insane.

Sean keeps sending money every few days, two hundred, five hundred, eight hundred, always with advice about scarves, umbrellas and sleep. Her replies amount to a single "K." He reads it as his sister growing up; she says nothing about who she really is. At the office, her cold grey eyes keep landing on him during meetings, and he becomes convinced she is building a case to fire him.

He has no idea the transfers are reaching the woman who signs off on his future, or why she lets them continue.
