Story

The story

In New York City, the love story of Robert Blackwood and his wife Elena is legendary. He bears three long scars from saving her from her father's rage, and he gifts her the Blackwood Spire, the city's tallest skyscraper. Their son Alan is called the proof of their love.

But when Alan turns three, a beautiful woman named Natalie moves in next door and claims Robert is giving her a child instead. That night, the villa next door burns, and Robert carries Natalie from the flames. He accuses Elena of setting the fire, and though she admits it, he refuses to let her go, tearing up her divorce papers.

The next day, Natalie fills their home with pink furniture and blocks Alan's asthma medicine, while Robert ignores his son's struggle to breathe. As Alan collapses, Elena snatches him up and runs for the door.

Opening excerpt

My father had three long scars on his back from saving my mother from her father’s rage.

The Blackwood Spire, the city’s tallest skyscraper, was his wedding gift to her.

The night I was born, fireworks lit up the sky—another gift for my mother.

I was called the proof of their love.

But when I turned three, a beautiful woman moved next door. She took my hand and placed it on her round belly.
