Story

The story

On his eighteenth birthday, Zeke Beasley is arrested for assault after his sister Alina testifies that he hurt Brett during a sleepwalking episode he never knew he had. Sentenced to five years, he endures beatings from Derrick Wiley, the cellblock ringleader, and learns from the guards that Alina framed him to groom her adopted brother.

A week before release, Zeke is hospitalized and diagnosed with acute leukemia. Dr. Phillip Craig tells him a bone marrow donor could give him five more years, but Zeke insists he has no family. Freed early, he is met by Alina, who forbids him the front seat because it belongs to Brett and refuses to believe he is sick. At home, Brett reveals that Alina arranged the prison beatings to get rid of him.

Zeke must survive a house where the sister who once protected him now wants him gone.

Opening excerpt

On my eighteenth birthday, I was arrested for assault.

Nothing I said or did could prove my innocence, because the witness who testified against me in court was my own sister, Alina Beasley.

"Zeke, you have a serious sleepwalking disorder. You just never knew about it! But you hurt Brett this time. I can't cover for you anymore!"

Just like that, I was sent to prison and sentenced to five years.
