Story
The story
For five years, Sadie has stood beside Justin, believing their travels will end in marriage. On a nineteenth trip abroad, he leads her into a dense rainforest, where a viper coils around her calf. Justin leaps past her to catch Renee, his childhood best friend who vanished two years ago, and Sadie collapses in the mud, understanding at last that the journeys were never for them — they were cover while he hunted Renee, tracking her by the red dot on his phone.
When Sadie wakes in a hospital room, it is empty. Justin has left a message saying the hospital is too depressing, and Renee's social media shows the two of them laughing at a cathedral and on a beach. Then a doctor delivers the news that her baby could not be saved — the last chance she and Justin had. She calls him, and he mocks her grief as a lie.
Sadie is done waiting for a man whose eyes hold only another woman.
