Story
The story
On the night Willow Cheng wins Best Actress, she poisons the wine and kills the woman who raised her, blaming her adoptive mother for keeping her from her wealthy birth parents. Dying, the woman hears Willow wish she could go back twenty years and never be adopted at all. Then she wakes in the orphanage office, twenty years younger, on the very day she once chose Willow.
This time she grants the wish. When the seven-year-old Willow shrieks that she would rather die than be adopted, Ms. Hayes walks away without a fight. Willow, it seems, remembers the past life too, and she throws herself at Brenda, a woman from the old hometown she mistakes for her real mother. Brenda takes her home only for an extra pair of hands.
Weeks later, Brenda dumps the feverish, bruised child on Ms. Hayes's doorstep and refuses to keep her. Ms. Hayes steps back, unmoved, and reminds Brenda that Willow swore she would rather die than have her as a mother.
