Story
The story
For seven years Nicola has been married to Derek, but his heart still belongs to Amber, the woman he lost long ago. When Amber returns with her daughter Zoe, Derek rushes to them at every chance, while his own daughter Hazel waits at the door for a father who never comes home.
On Hazel's birthday, Derek vanishes, and a phone call reveals he is setting off fireworks for Zoe instead. He gives away the gift meant for Hazel, then abandons her on the shoulder of the I-95 after Zoe throws her backpack from the car. Nicola, a neurosurgeon who once saved Derek's life, finally sees the truth.
While Hazel cries herself to sleep, Nicola submits her transfer request to a hospital in her hometown. When Derek calls again, blaming Hazel for Zoe's asthma, Nicola must decide how much longer she will let him hurt them.
Opening excerpt
I had been married to Derek for seven years, and it took me begging him for two weeks straight just to get him to agree to spend our daughter’s birthday with us.
But when the day arrived, he didn't come home.
I slipped out onto the balcony, out of Hazel's sight, and called him a dozen times. Every single one went straight to voicemail.
Hazel stood by the front door, her eyes fixed on the driveway, yet she still turned to comfort me.
"Don't worry, Mommy. Daddy’s probably just picking up my present."
