Story

The story

Aaron Quincy spends his first Christmas Eve at his in-laws' home, where his mother-in-law, Jenny Stroll, cooks alone while the family ignores her. When he helps in the kitchen, Jenny dumps the work on him, then demands he pay 326 dollars for the meal, calling him an outsider. She refuses Winona Zachary's offer to cover it, rummages through his bag, and smashes his laptop.

Aaron refuses to pay and plans to leave, but Winona persuades him to stay the night. The next morning his property deed is missing, and his brother-in-law, Adam Zachary, accuses him of calling the family thieves. Days later a stranger calls, claiming he bought Aaron's house for 800,000 dollars and holds the deed. Aaron learns Jenny sold it.

Jenny admits the sale, insisting what is his is hers. Aaron calls the police, and Winona blames him for targeting her mother.

Opening excerpt

I had just sat down when Jenny started cursing, "They just sit there and wait to eat. They didn't even offer to help. Are they trying to exhaust me?"

She would even slam the pots and pans from time to time. "How heartless for young people to let an elderly person like me serve them!"

I felt a bit restless and nudged Winona. "Maybe you should go help her?"

Jenny's insults escalated after hearing that.

Remembering it was my first time spending Christmas at my in-laws' house and not wanting things to get too ugly, I got up to help.
