Story
The story
For eight years, Jade has pinched pennies for a wedding that keeps receding. Yet the durian she craved for two months vanishes the moment his lab partner Kendall admires it, and every small joy she nurtures in their apartment follows it out the door.
Connor insists Kendall is saving his academic career, that a banana a day is fair carpool payment. He forgets the story of Jade's childhood banana aversion, which he has heard five times, and keeps buying them anyway because Kendall loves them. When Jade protests, he calls her petty and asks how they will ever marry if she lacks basic social grace.
Then Jade finds the playlist titled Connor & Kendall, fifteen monthly songs, and a reply to a track she once sent him that he dismissed with a single letter. The whiteboard still bears her plea for an apology he never gave.

It was a rare indulgence, something I had craved for weeks. But in the few minutes it took me to use the bathroom after getting home, the fruit was gone.
When Connor walked through the front door, I asked him in a panic where it went.
He didn't even look up from his phone. His tone was breezy, utterly indifferent.
