Story

The story

Chloe has spent her childhood memorising formulas and chasing perfect scores, desperate to earn her father's approval and protect her twin sister Mia, who was born autistic and did not speak until she was seven. When Mia suddenly begins talking fluently and solves in a minute the maths problem that defeated Chloe all afternoon, their father declares Mia a prodigy and redirects every family resource to her, leaving Chloe ignored and discarded.

Overhearing her parents, Chloe learns they intend to send her away as a child bride to the mayor of the neighbouring town, using the dowry to hire another tutor for Mia. Her mother, too weak to intervene, can only weep and refuse her even a pendant like Mia's. Then Mia appears at her door with a knapsack, announcing she is running away from home.

As memories of a past life surface, Chloe resolves that this time she will make her sister stay, and she will be the one to leave.

Opening excerpt

My father planned to marry her off as soon as she turned sixteen.

I, on the other hand, carried the weight of high expectations and was meticulously groomed for success.

Pitying my sister's situation, I would sneak around to play with her, enduring my father's scoldings and beatings, secretly vowing to save her.
