Drunk on Regret

Five years ago, Claire gave up her research achievements for love, handing her findings to her husband Marcus Parker so he could perform her mother's high-risk surgery. Then his childhood friend Hannah Carter returned from years of treatment abroad, and Marcus began playing truth or dare with her, kissing her through a poker card while Claire watched.

When Hannah feigned an asthma attack, Marcus blamed Claire, cut his operating hand while peeling Hannah an apple, and drank heavily the night before her mother's surgery. Called away by her aunt, Claire learned her mother had died; Marcus was in the pool with Hannah, who claimed to be pregnant. He smashed her mother's urn, scattering the ashes.

Having lost both her mother and her unborn child, Claire finally gives up on Marcus and turns back to Professor Brown and her abandoned research.
