Story
The story
On the day she is diagnosed with stomach cancer, Lily sits outside the hospital holding a positive pregnancy test. Her boyfriend of eight years, Julian, calls to postpone their marriage license, and she agrees without a fight.
That night, Mia, a new hire from their company's PR department, brings a drunken Julian home. Driving Mia back, Lily later finds a torn wrapper wedged in the car's seatbelt buckle and reads messages on Julian's phone that leave her feeling like an intruder in her own relationship.
As her illness, her pregnancy, and Julian's growing distance close in, Lily must decide what she is willing to hold on to.

On the day I was diagnosed with stomach cancer, I sat outside the hospital clutching a positive pregnancy test, staring blankly for a very long time.
My phone buzzed. It was Julian, my boyfriend of eight years.
“Lily, about getting the marriage license… can we hold off for a bit? Give me some time to think it over?”
“Sure.”
“It’s not that I don’t want to marry you—”
He paused, clearly stunned that I had agreed so easily and without a fight. He quickly added that he wouldn’t be home for dinner and hastily hung up.
