Story

The story

At seven years old, Estelle Fuller is brought before the Court Judgment of the Born Wicked by her own father, Warren, accused of being wicked by nature. She vomits constantly, ruining her father's career and her brother Bryce's birthday, and after each episode she laughs provocatively. The judge rules against her, and her blood ties with her father will be severed before she is sent to prison.

Estelle accepts the verdict calmly, but demands one condition: that the judge watch her memories. The extraction will crack open her skull and could kill her, yet she insists. Bryce protests, and the live audience believes she is only trying to torment her family.

Only Estelle knows the truth she cannot speak: she was born mute, and a childhood fever left her hands too unsteady to write. As the first memory is torn from her brain without anesthesia, the court begins to see what really happened.

Opening excerpt

If I'm found guilty, my blood ties with my dad will be forcibly severed. Then, I'll be sent to prison.

Everyone claims that Dad is just making a fuss over nothing.

"Your daughter is still so young, so it's natural for her to fall ill. As a father, you should be more considerate toward her."

But when the evidence is shown, everyone clamps up immediately.
