Story
The story
It began with a stray cat that Lester and Sandy supposedly rescued together. After that, Lester kept finding reasons to visit Sandy's apartment, claiming the cat would let no one else touch it. The two bickered endlessly, yet he memorized her door code, learned her stomach was sensitive, and knew she needed warm water before bed. He even missed Charlie's birthday, saying the cat had a fever.
The night Charlie's parents drove three hours to meet him, Lester never arrived. Charlie went to Sandy's apartment and found no cat bed, no litter box, no stray hair — only Lester's slippers, his razor, and his handwriting on a sticky note. Sandy appeared in Lester's limited-edition shirt, spinning excuses about a vet visit and a downpour. Then Lester walked in with groceries, everything Sandy loved to eat, and Charlie's phone revealed the truth: Sandy has no registered pets and is severely allergic to dander.
With her parents waiting and her father recovering from heart surgery, Charlie ends the relationship, but Lester refuses to accept it.
Opening excerpt
My boyfriend, Lester, and my best friend, Sandy, supposedly rescued it from the streets. After that day, Lester began spending more and more time at her apartment.
Every time he went, he’d put on a show of utter annoyance. "If that damn cat didn't refuse to let anyone else touch him, I wouldn't even step foot in her place."
Sandy would roll her eyes right back. "As if I want you here. The cat likes you, not me."
They bickered constantly, always at each other's throats.
But somehow, amid all the arguing, he memorized the keypad code to her front door.
