Story

The story

Ten days before the wedding, Shayne Taylor's fiancée, Claire Yardley, spends over a hundred million on a luxury yacht for Marcus Collins. Seven days before, she spends fifty million dollars on Marcus' birthday. Three days before, she kisses him by the sea. So Shayne quietly discards the matching rings, burns the photo album of their past, and cancels the wedding, returning the engagement token to the Yardley family. Claire's parents, Preston Yardley and Miriam Lambert, accept his withdrawal without asking why.

Claire still believes Shayne knows nothing. She presses a scratched watch into his hand, a gift she first gave Marcus, and threatens to call off the engagement when he objects. She leaves for meals with Marcus and warns Shayne to behave. At the company where their five-year relationship was never made public, Shayne resigns, listening to colleagues' whispers about Marcus and Ms. Yardley.

He has already ended the engagement. She does not know it yet.

Opening excerpt

Seven days before the wedding, she spent 50 million dollars to celebrate Marcus' birthday. Thus, I set fire to the photo album that held every memory of our past.
