Story
The story
Abandoned at a county children’s home when she was three days old, Leah grows up craving her mother’s love. When the calls become too much, her mother sets a cruel limit: Leah may call her "Mom" only three more times in her life. For ten years, Leah keeps silent.
On the night she turns twenty, Leah is assaulted. At the precinct, she uses one of her remaining calls to ask her mother to come. Instead of comfort, she receives disgust. Then her father, Richard, arrives and begs her to drop the charges—the attacker, Travis, is Rhonda’s son. As her mother and Rhonda clash and her father turns violent, Leah must decide whether to protect the family that never protected her.
Opening excerpt
My father began his affair while my mother was still pregnant with me. And from the moment she found out, she turned all of that venom toward the child growing inside her belly.
When I was three days old, she left me at the threshold of a county children’s home, turned on her heel, and never looked back.
