I Choose To Let Go

After a relapse lands him in hospital, Jack overhears his family arguing about the cost of his illness. Diagnosed three years ago with Guillain-Barré syndrome, he has watched his parents sell their house and move into a tiny rented flat to pay for treatments, while his older brother Alan considers giving up postgraduate studies to earn money. Believing himself a burden, Jack writes a farewell note and leaves the flat, making his way to a nearby pond.

His mother returns with groceries and calls out for him; Alan comes home from his part-time job, and neither finds him. When their father phones about a scratched car and a demand for compensation, the family rushes to the intersection, where they hand over the little money they have left.

Unseen, Jack follows them, watching the parents and brother he chose to leave behind.
