Story

The story

A woman is splashed by a passing car at a crosswalk, ruining her white silk blouse just as she is rushing to meet a client at the airport. With no time to go home and no other shops nearby, she ducks into a boutique, where a sales consultant named Angela greets her.

Angela refuses to let her try on a white blouse, citing store policy about makeup, then cuts the tag before any payment is taken. When the woman tries to pay, Angela claims she lacks authorization to process payments and keeps her waiting, only to be caught playing Spider Solitaire on the register screen.

Told the manager will be back in about forty minutes, the woman gives up and heads for the door, but Angela blocks her, accusing her of theft and threatening to call the police. The glass door will not open.

Opening excerpt

I was in a rush to change out of my sewage-splashed clothes, but the sales associate blocked my way to the fitting room.

"I'm so sorry, ma'am, but you can't try on a white blouse with makeup on. It would be a shame if you got foundation or lipstick on it."

I frowned but understood the policy. "Fine. I'll just buy it, then. I'm in a hurry."

She quickly snipped off the tag but then made no move to take my card.

Losing my patience, I tried to grab the blouse to change, but she blocked me again.

"I'm so sorry, ma'am, but you haven't paid yet!"
