Story
The story
After dinner, a son tells his mother that she and his father should skip the family holiday trip. His father, who has terminal liver cancer, has already paid ten thousand dollars for the journey, and it may be his last. The son wants to take his wife Jessie's parents instead, saying his company had a terrible year.
When the mother refuses, the argument turns bitter. She reminds him of the fifty thousand dollars his father gave for his wedding and the down payment on his luxury condo. The son calls his sick father a burden and says the trip is compensation for the money spent on his treatment. His father collapses and is rushed to the hospital.
After he recovers, the parents return home to find their suitcases by the front door. Their son and Jessie have moved her parents in, and they shut the door in their faces.
Opening excerpt
“Mom, about the holiday trip… you and Dad should probably sit this one out.”
My son’s words, spoken so casually after dinner, made my hands freeze where I was clearing the table.
“What do you mean? Your father already paid the travel agency. It was ten thousand dollars.”
