Story
The story
On the seventh New Year's Eve of their marriage, a wife prepares the celebratory dinner while her husband, James, and their son, Daniel, rush out to meet Sophie. James admits the affair with cold indifference, calling it the seven-year itch, and offers divorce. Daniel hides behind his father, saying he wants to be with Dad and Sophie. She sits alone before a table of cold food, then finds Sophie's social media post of their dinner, and understands she did nothing wrong—they simply tired of her. She signs the divorce.
Her mother blames her, and James warns her to keep her mother quiet, muttering about nepotism. She learns he gave Sophie's family jobs at his company. She dusts off her resume and applies for work, but James and Daniel mock her. James insists he never wanted a divorce, only to make her understand her place. After a job interview, she attends Daniel's parent-teacher meeting and finds Sophie already sitting in her place—a younger version of herself.
Opening excerpt
“Come on, Dad, hurry up! Sophie is getting impatient, and you know she hates to wait.”
I froze, thinking it was a joke. I forced a smile and asked, “Which Sophie…?”
My husband, James, admitted his affair with a chilling indifference.
“Honestly, celebrating the New Year with you every year has gotten pretty boring. It’s just what you think it is—the seven-year itch. As for us, if we can make it work, fine. If not, let’s just get a divorce.”
The sudden news left my mind a complete blank.
