Story

The story

Fresh off a year-end bonus, a young woman splurges on limited-edition Air Jordans for her boyfriend, Aiden Dickerson, a graduate student. Days later she spots the same unopened shoes on a resale site for a fraction of the price. The seller's shipping confirmation names Aiden as the recipient, and his profile reveals a graveyard of her gifts—headphones, a console, a tablet, even a hand-knitted scarf—all listed and sold.

She buys the shoes back through a burner account, then tells Aiden she hid a classic Patek Philippe inside the shoebox. His panic is immediate. He had never opened it, and now he is begging to know where the watch went, while she quietly gathers the proof of every gift he cashed in.

To Aiden, she was never a girlfriend—just an ATM. And she has decided he will lose everything before she is done.

Opening excerpt

I never expected him to list them on Mercari the very next day—twenty percent of market price, seal still intact.

I bought them back with a burner account. Once delivery confirmed, I called him.

"Darling, did you like my little surprise? Satisfied?"

Aiden sounded lost. "What surprise?"

I let my voice wobble with fake hurt.

"I hid a classic Patek Philippe inside the shoebox. Worth over seventy thousand. You didn't see it?"
