Story

The story

On the eve of her wedding, Nora's fiancé Julian Zane rushes to save his adopted sister Elena, who was drugged at a bar. When Nora urges him to take Elena to a hospital, Julian strikes her and insists he must save Elena himself. He shuts himself in a private room with Elena while Nora listens outside, and the guests' whispers make clear what everyone believes is happening.

Julian emerges disheveled, Elena wrapped in his jacket, and orders Nora to buy condoms and fever medicine before returning to the room. Humiliated, Nora leaves the villa, cancels the wedding and begins returning the gifts. Elena then posts a photo of their intertwined hands online, and Julian replies with a hugging emoji.

When Elena calls to gloat, Julian wakes and defends her, telling Nora he will sleep with whomever he wants. Nora calmly agrees that they are not legally married, and resolves to cut Julian out of her life for good.

Opening excerpt

I grabbed my fiancé as he was about to rush out. "Take her to the hospital. Doctors have proper antidotes."

Julian Zane slapped me for suggesting that. There was a savagery in his eyes I had never seen before. "Nora, do you have any conscience at all? Elena is suffering a fate worse than death, and you're still nitpicking?"

He yanked off his tie and spoke in a hoarse tone. "She's the sister I've cherished since childhood. I will save her even if I have to sacrifice myself to do it."
