Story
The story
My cousin finally landed a teaching position in the public school system, so I offered to take her out to dinner. She insisted on a ridiculously expensive place, and though I gritted my teeth, I agreed. But when I pushed open the door, I found the place packed. A whole crowd of them were already there, eating and packing up leftovers, even making snide remarks at me.
“It’s not like we’re costing you a fortune! Don't be so cheap!”
Kayla, my cousin, even spotted the jade bracelet on my wrist and immediately demanded it. I’ve tolerated her freeloading on her own for years, but now she’s brought a whole entourage to do it? I just smiled, a silent agreement to their greed, and ordered abalone and lobster by the platter for them. Kayla just kept gushing about how "generous" I was. I smiled back and said I needed to use the restroom.
“Rachel! You're not trying to ditch us, are you?!”
“Why would you think that? My purse is right here!”
I quickly told the waiter to bring two more bottles of their finest, then turned and slipped away.

Opening excerpt
She proactively made the reservation, chirping that she had a special "gift" for me that day and that I absolutely had to dress up. On the appointed day, I put in my daily contacts, slipped into a fresh dress, and strapped on my sky-high heels. Fearing rush hour traffic would delay me, I even took a cab to the restaurant ahead of time.
“Hello, I'm here for a reservation under Kayla Sullivan.”
“Let me check for you… Ms. Sullivan booked our largest private dining room.”
