Story

The story

Lydia has spent her life running to keep pace with Oliver, the man she loves, and with a family that has always revolved around her younger sister Zora. After three all-nighters to finish her research early, she learns that Oliver and Zora are together in Chicago for his birthday, and that her mother expects her to keep looking after Zora as always.

When a lab senior named Henry quietly catches an error in her rushed data, Lydia asks him to lunch. There, surrounded by her favorite spicy dishes, she finally feels seen. Then Zora and Oliver walk in, and Oliver's cool question about her phone leaves Lydia smiling behind a broken excuse.

For once, Lydia is not the one running.

But instead of a text from him, my sister Zora’s Instagram DM popped up first: "Oh my god, Chicago is so much fun!"

The photo showed her and Oliver, heads tilted together, smiling.

My smile froze. "You're in Chicago?"

"Yeah! Got here three days ago. Wanted to surprise Oliver for his birthday!"

I stared at the screen, then calmly called Oliver.

"Isn't your defense in two days? I thought you said you were drowning in prep work and couldn't make time for anything?"
