The story

Michelle Sinclair lands the biggest contract her firm has seen in a decade, and her boss Arthur Beaumont insists on celebrating at The Starling Room, where the tasting menu alone runs into four figures. He tells her to put the $8,900 tab on her personal card and promises the firm will reimburse her by Monday.

Monday brings a voucher for $3,500. Arthur calls the $5,400 shortfall a tuition fee for her lack of negotiation skills, and when Finance's Monica Kent reviews her Chicago trip, a $5,000 hotel bill is cut to $500 and her pay stub reads five hundred dollars. Her commission on the ten-million-dollar deal has not cleared, and the office watches her take the blame.

Michelle has a recording of Arthur promising to cover the overage. The question is whether the truth matters to people who only care about power.

When the check arrived, he leaned over with a practiced, oily smile and whispered for me to put the $8,900 tab on my personal card. "The firm will reimburse you by Monday, Michelle. Don't worry about it."

But on Monday, the finance department handed me a voucher for exactly $3,500.
