Story
The story
Alan is heading home for the New Year when his wife, Phoebe, hands him a standing-room ticket and asks him to trade his first-class seat to Mark Foster, the man she dotes on, whose leg is injured. When Alan refuses, Phoebe and Mark perform their victimhood for the crowded car, and the passengers turn on him.
But Alan remembers another life: the trip he spent standing for forty hours, the shove on the platform, and the train that killed him while Phoebe inherited his house and moved in with Mark. This time he will not yield, and he exposes the money Mark sent him for a far more expensive ticket.
As the crowd's sympathy curdles and a train attendant steps in, Phoebe and Mark press harder for the seat Alan paid for.
Opening excerpt
I was heading home for the New Year when my wife, Phoebe, gently supported her one true love—a man with a conveniently broken leg—and brazenly shoved a standing-room-only ticket in my face.
“Here, this is Mark’s ticket. You two should switch.”
When I didn’t move, she nudged me again. “Alan, I’m talking to you. Didn’t you hear me? Mark’s leg is injured; he can’t stand for the whole trip. Give him your first-class seat.”
I finally looked up, my gaze cold as I met theirs. My refusal was blunt.
