Lies at a Funeral

At her father's funeral, Hazel's fiancé Arthur publicly proposes to her father's illegitimate daughter and plays a video of their lovemaking, leaving Hazel a laughingstock among Wildore's elite. Arthur's older brother Edward drives the pair out, kneels, and offers Hazel a lifelong vow of protection. She accepts, and three years later they are a week from their wedding.

Then Hazel overhears Edward with his lawyer: his courtship was never love, but a scheme to let Florence inherit the Thornton Family. He admits he orchestrated the funeral video, and that he is only waiting for Hazel's ill mother to die so the family will crumble and fall into his hands.
