The Gilded Leash

For three years, Elena has kept Declan Mercer on a gilded leash, demanding eighteen hours of his day, tracking his mileage and auditing his life. Then crimson words appear before her eyes, revealing that Declan is the Mercer family heir, that he despises her paranoia, and that he plans to ship her to an off-grid mining outpost once Genevieve Shaw lands next month.

Terrified, Elena abruptly releases him, claiming real love is not a cage and that they should have mutual respect. Declan's tenderness turns glacial; he seizes her wrist, demands to know what game she is playing, then walks out into the night, leaving her alone with the mocking words.

When he returns the next morning to find her packing, he snatches a framed photograph from her hands, and the crimson text drifts past his shoulder once more.
