Story
The story
At her wedding rehearsal, a bride watches her fiancé's first love draw a cruel clown smile and the word "DEFECTIVE" across her deaf brother's face with a black marker, while the groomsmen laugh. When she tears off her ten-million-dollar diamond ring and calls off the wedding, her fiancé Elliot seizes her wrist and warns that if she walks out, her brother Callum loses the surgical slot he holds with Dr. Reynolds, the country's top otolaryngologist. Callum lost his hearing five years ago saving her from a collapsing iron beam, and restoring it is her life's obsession.
Forced to stay, she watches the couple's montage replace her own wedding video, then sees Vera present a dress rack holding both her six months of hand-stitched silk work and a cheap neon-green tulle dress. Elliot lets Vera decide everything, and the bride must choose how much humiliation she will swallow for her brother's surgery.
Opening excerpt
With deliberate, cruel strokes, she drew a grotesque clown smile across his face. Then, right across his forehead, she scribbled the word "DEFECTIVE" in giant block letters.
"The little deaf guy can't hear all the happy music anyway," she giggled, holding up the Sharpie like a prize. "I’m just giving him a smile so he can join in on the fun!"
