Story

The story

Elena married into the Moretti family, but her husband Lucio, the Don, has handed control of the estate to Gianna, a girl he brought in from the slums. Every dollar Elena spends now needs Gianna's approval, and Gianna treats her with open contempt.

When her mother-in-law Rosaria falls down the stairs, Elena begs Gianna for the money to save her. Gianna refuses, convinced Elena is lying about her own mother dying, and Lucio sides with Gianna, drafting a waiver for Elena to sign. He believes it is Elena's mother who fell, not his own. Rosaria, the woman who built the Moretti family, lies dying while her son celebrates her birthday.

By the time Elena reaches the estate, Gianna is already burning Rosaria's belongings and telling the guests a thief fell from the stairs. Elena slaps her, and Lucio shields Gianna, asking if she is all right.

Opening excerpt

From that day on, every dollar I spent had to be approved by Gianna.

I couldn't even decide to buy a single lipstick, or one dress, on my own.

Later, my mother-in-law fell down the stairs on the night before her birthday.

I called Gianna right away and demanded 200 grand for the medical bills.

But she decided I was lying. "Donna, you really made up a story about your own mother dying just so I'd approve you more money?"
