For eight years, six months and twenty-five days, Chloe believed she and Landon were building a life together. Then, over dinner, a phone left face down on the table and a notification buzzing against the wood made the truth impossible to ignore. Because of a promise Landon made at a high-school pep rally, he never ended things himself; he simply waited for Chloe to say the words. He packed in under ten minutes, and less than an hour later his new girlfriend appeared beside him in a video: Jenna, the intern Chloe had mentored.

Days later, a pregnancy test shows two pink lines, and Chloe remembers Landon's sudden talk of having a baby. At a night out with friends, Landon corners her to warn her not to hurt Jenna at the office, and their friends watch in pity. Then, on the morning her promotion is meant to be announced, Jenna arrives in a designer dress with coffee for everyone but Chloe.
