Story

The story

In a wasteland Citadel besieged by the Scourge, Cara has spent three years as a Healer at Holden's side—until the night he brings home Debby, a newly discovered Purifier, and tells Cara she is obsolete. He orders her to stop calling herself his girlfriend and offers her a transfer out of the Core Sector.

Cara says nothing. Deep in her pocket is a lab report that does not say Healer. It says Purifier—the same rare gift the entire Citadel has been searching the wasteland for. Debby takes Cara's place at Holden's side, strips her rank, and sends her to clear mutant carcasses in the toxic ruins of Sector D with nothing but a stained hazmat suit.

As the Citadel bows to its new idol, Cara keeps her secret folded in her pocket, waiting for the moment it will matter.
