Story
The story
Isabelle accused Thea of stealing her pearls, and Cole, Thea's brother, hired the best lawyer in the city to prosecute her. Thea was sentenced to three years in prison. Before sentencing, Cole's own lawyer begged him to stop, but Cole insisted she had to learn a lesson, promising he would be her safety net afterward.
Three years later, Thea walked out of the correctional facility. Cole was waiting, but she stepped back from his hand. Inside, she had met Leo, a man framed for financial fraud, and they had a plan to start a life together once he was released. She only returned to Cole's house to retrieve her father's last effects.
At a welcome-home dinner, Isabelle presented Thea with the same pearl necklace, the one Cole had given Isabelle, the reason Thea had spent three years in hell. When Isabelle taunted her, something inside Thea shattered, and she swiped the box off the table.
Opening excerpt
He didn’t just drag me to court; he hired the best lawyer in the city to stand by her side and prosecute me.
I was sentenced to three years. I became a thief.
Before the final sentencing, his own lawyer tried to reason with him.
“Cole, just let this be a scare tactic. A real prison sentence will ruin your sister’s life.”
My brother’s face was stone.
