Story
The story
For five years, Beckett Pierce has let his wife Mallory and her mother Erica believe he is a low-level administrative assistant earning fifty thousand a year. Their marriage runs on a proportional split: she covers seventy percent of every expense, he covers thirty, and he is expected to be grateful. He does the chores, absorbs the pity, and listens while Erica calls him too broke to be a man. What they do not know is that Beckett is the co-founder of a tech firm whose income averages nearly a million a year, and that he has quietly bought three properties in cash.
When a corporate gala photo uploads to the shared family album, the nameplate on his chest reads Co-Founder. Erica calls within seconds, demanding answers, and the truth he has hidden for five years is stripped bare. His suitcases are already packed, and the moving truck is ten minutes away.
But the photograph is not the only secret in the house. Paying the utility bills, Beckett sees a push notification on Mallory's iPad, and the passcode he was never supposed to be clever enough to use opens a door he cannot close again.
Opening excerpt
The notification pinged on my phone: New photos added to the family album. I tapped it idly, and there it was—a group photo from a corporate gala.
I was sitting dead-center at the head table. The nameplate pinned to my chest was unmistakable: Beckett Pierce, Co-Founder.
In my living room, several suitcases stood by the door, already packed and zipped shut.
Less than three seconds after the photo uploaded, my mother-in-law’s name flashed on the screen. I answered.
"Beckett! What the hell is this photo?!" Erica’s voice was a jagged blade of interrogation.
I couldn’t help but smile.
