Story
The story
Samantha's roommate Courtney treats her online boyfriend, Ian, like a personal ATM, demanding designer bags and expensive gifts while he lives on stale bread and tap water, hauling drywall and pedaling deliveries to fund her demands. Samantha keeps her distance until she discovers Courtney has been using her profile pictures and candid snapshots to catfish him.
Enraged, Samantha confronts Courtney and demands the photos come down. That very night, exhausted from back-to-back graveyard shifts, Ian dozes off at his handlebars, crashes through a guardrail and drowns in the river. Hours later, a soaking wet, gaunt young figure appears beside Samantha's mattress, extending a dripping hand and asking her to keep him company.
Months earlier, an anonymous message from Ian had begun it all, and Courtney seized his contact the moment Samantha tried to delete it. Now the boy who gave everything for a face that was never Courtney's has come back, and Samantha must face what her silence and her stolen likeness set in motion.
Opening excerpt
My roommate Courtney treated her online boyfriend like a personal ATM.
Every conversation was a casual extortion—she demanded designer bags, DoorDash feasts, expensive cosmetics—and the boy on the other end swallowed every bitter pill with gratitude. To finance her lifestyle, he lived on stale sandwich bread and tap water. He hauled drywall on construction sites under the sweltering sun by day and pedaled a delivery bike through freezing rain until three in the morning, running himself ragged like a stray dog.
